FANTASY BASEBALL SLEEPERS and BUSTS

Fantasy Baseball Sleepers

These are players who are who I think are underrated and per current mock drafts are being picked lower than what I think they will really be worth. Things such as age, new team, added competition for playing time, injuries, etc. are what helps formulate this list.

Sport Fanatics Hitters:

Carlos Santana (CLE-C) Deep Sleeper: Great hitter and with V. Martinez out of the picture should get an opportunity to make the team. May be a June call up.

Chris Davis (TEX-1B) Had a bad year last season, has ability to rebound.

Billy Butler (KC-1B) Has always been able to hit for average, but now the power is developing. Nice mid round alternative with upside.

Scott Sizemore (DET-2B) Rookie who should start at 2B. Decent power and speed combo who is a nice MI option with a later round pick.

Rickie Weeks (MIL-2B) Prior to injury was having a good 2009 season. We think this is the year he puts it all together and stays healthy.

Sean Rodriguez (TB-2B) Deep Sleeper: Will be given an opportunity for playing time, has scorched the minor league system with his power.

Asdrubal Cabrera (CLE-2B/SS) No category stands out, but solid across the board. Often gets overlooked, but is a good MI option with dual position eligibility.

Elvis Andrus (TEX-SS) Nice source of SB's as he should get 35+ and not hurt you in the other categories.

Ian Stewart (COL-3B/2B) Think Mark Reynolds light going much later in the draft.

Julio Borbon (TEX-OF) Will be a starter in the opening day lineup, 40 SB and a .285 batting average should make him an attractive middle of the draft alternative.

Juan Pierre (CHW-OF) Back to being a starter. 45 SB and a .290 batting average should be obtainable. No power, but those SB's are very... very helpful.

Carlos Gonzalez (COL-OF) Tons of potential, 20/20 is probable.

Andrew McCutchen (PIT-OF) Has all the tools to be an elite fantasy OF. Expect 90 runs, 30 SB and 15 HR's. Get him cheap while you can.

Michael Cuddyer (MIN-OF) Rodney Dangerfield? Gets no respect, but expect good power numbers again in 2010.

Desmond Jennings (TB-OF) Deep Sleeper: If there are injuries, he could be a steal. Get him very late in the draft especially if you are in a keeper league.

Sport Fanatics Pitchers:

Brett Anderson (OAK-SP) Is the real deal and at age 22 is just beginning to scratch the surface of his talents. Keeper league is a must get starting pitcher.

Ricky Nolasco (FLA-SP) Had a horrible start to the 2009 season, look for him to regain his 2008 form.

Kevin Slowey (MIN-SP) Good K ratio, great control on a team that will get him wins.

Yovani Gallardo (MIL-SP) Has outstanding stuff, is his year if he can just stay healthy.

Max Scherzer (DET-SP) Now in DET. Like his K potential, solid middle to late round pick.

Brian Matusz (BAL-SP) Deep Sleeper: Only 23, but has great stuff and high K pitcher.

Francisco Liriano (MIN-SP) Coming off of very bad year. Pitched well in Dominican League this winter.

Octavio Dotel (PIT-RP) Looks to be the closer in PIT. Based on history of work, may surprise people.

Billy Wagner (ATL-RP) Should be a good fit in ATL and is back to being a closer.

Fantasy Baseball Busts

These are players who are not bad players, but who I think are overrated and per current mock drafts are being picked higher than what I think they will really be worth. Things such as age, new team, added competition for playing time, injuries, etc. are what helps formulate this list.

Sport Fanatics Hitters:

Bengie Molina (SF-C) Age, weight and Buster Posey.

Joe Mauer (MIN-C) Consistently drafted in top 8, new stadium raises questions.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia (TEX-C) Injuries and stiff competition for playing time.

Mark Reynolds (ARI-1B/3B) Power is obvious, but that batting average is a killer.

Aaron Hill (TOR-2B) Will not match HR/RBI numbers from 2009.

Stephen Drew (ARI-SS) Average fantasy SS who does not get SB's.

Jason Bartlett (TB-SS) Will not match 2009 batting average numbers.

Chone Figgins (SEA-3B) New team, pitcher's park. Trend is good year/bad year player.

Gordon Beckham (CHW-3B) Getting way too much hype this early in his career.

Rajai Davis (OAK-OF) Much more competition for playing time.

Manny Ramirez (LAD-OF) Age is catching up with ManRam.

Dexter Fowler (COL-OF) Lots of competition for playing time in COL OF.

David Ortiz (BOS-DH) Age is catching up with Big Papi.

Sport Fanatics Pitchers:

Chris Carpenter (STL-SP) Won't match stellar 2009 season, time for another injury.

Javier Vazquez (NYY-SP) Move to NY will hurt his ERA.

Jair Jurrjens (ATL-SP) Not enough K's to be up so high on many draft boards.

Jake Peavy (CHW-SP) No longer in NL pitcher's park. ERA will spike upward.

Brandon Webb (ARI-SP) Coming off of injury, being drafted higher than expected.

Roy Oswalt (HOU-SP) Aging vet who is being drafted high on past results.

J.A. Happ (PHI-SP) Almost won NL Rookie of the Year last season. Had an unreasonably

high win %, not a strike out pitcher and the ERA looks to increase significantly.

Heath Bell (SD-RP) Trade rumors scare me. Value would go way down as a setup man.

David Aardsma (SEA-RP) Will revert back to the norm, ERA and WHIP should increase.

Trevor Hoffman (MIL-RP) Age has to catch up with him sometime.
